What the Peace House, DC means to me, why we need your help.
Peace House
At 1233 12 NW, Washington DC, something amazing is going on. People from all of the country and all over the world, living throughout one house, for a common goal. To change the world. War veterans from conflicts as early as Vietnam, to the wars still continuing today. People whose passions are as diverse as the Palestinian Crisis and the strife in the Middle East, to the struggles of the working classes in the United States. Young protesters, new to any form of social unrest, and one Concepcion Picciotto, a seventy four year old from Spain who has been holding down the White House Peace Vigil for over 30 years. Another collection of artists, musicians, writers.
The green fronted house, a two story house that was named “The People's Embassy” by it's former owner, Mr. William Thomas. Mr. Thomas was the founding protester of the White House Peace Vigil, which was once at the gates of 1600 Pennsylvania Ave, now situated across the street in Lafayette Park. He bought the house at a tax auction as a home for those who supported the Peace Vigil, and a home for traveling protesters and activists from all over the world so they had a safe place in the city to organize and stage protests all over the city.
Now, this “People's Embassy is under threat. A home for those who help keep the Vigil going, a home for those traveling with the Occupy Movement, and the home of Concepcion, is on the chopping block from Ellen Thomas. The members who love the house, are scheduled to be removed, and the house to be sold. The continuing dream and wishes of William Thomas, who passed away in 2009 of cancer, was that the Peace House, The People's Embassy, remain open after his passing to those still fighting for justice. The current occupants are fufilling the dreams and wishes of Mr. Thomas every day, with events to educate and to promote understanding of any and all issues that are important to the global peace movement.
To those that live and work here, it is a house of love, evolution, and constant movement. A celebration of a life of revolution, of mutual aid, and the respect of the common goal of our collective causes: peace, harmony, and hope. Sitting here at the edge of evolution, never backing down, taking the wishes of the world to the front steps of power everyday. All here are in for the long haul, and the poverty of our situtuation speaks to the heights of our ideals and the will of the fight we have ahead.
Waking up every morning at sunrise, working on actions, evolving ideas, phlosophies, and speaking to hundreds of people around the world each day.
Ideas are always welcomed and discussed, help, love and support are always needed. Revolution is the job. Revolution is the higher calling. Eternal Action. Eternal Evolution. We are Occupy Peace House, We are The People's Embassy. We are at your service to speak truth to power.
